HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MA’AM!
A happy and glorious new tea to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday.
To celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s 90th birthday, Twinings master blenders have created this very special commemorative blend of tea in a beautifully illustrated, limited edition collector’s tin.
THE COMMEMORATIVE TIN
The queen is famous for her roles as Head of State and Church, of course, but also her hats and love of horse racing. All these symbols have been included in this fun and elegant design. The lid is embossed with her insignia EIIR (Elizabeth Regina Secondo). The colours? Royal blue and gold, of course!
HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN
The Queen has long held a special place in the hearts of the people. Here we share just a few fun facts about our longest reigning monarch as she turns 90.
As Princess Elizabeth she made her first public radio broadcast with her sister, Princess Margaret, during the Second World War.
As a child the Princess Elizabeth disliked the crusts on her sandwiches, which her nanny used to make her eat during afternoon tea. Well, as Queen she apparently still insists on having her crusts cut off!
Elizabeth II is believed to be the only monarch in British history who has been properly trained to change a flat tyre or a spark plug! She served in the wartime ATS as 2nd Lieutenant Elizabeth Windsor.
She became Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 at just 25 years old. Married to the dashing Prince Philip of Greece, with two young children, princess Anne and prince Charles. They were a very glamorous young family. For the first time in history, her subjects all over the world were able to watch her spectacular coronation at Westminster Abbey.
Her first Prime Minister was the great Winston Churchill. David Cameron is her 12th PM! The secretary general of the United Nations described the Queen as “an anchor for our age” and “a leading symbol of grace, constancy and dignity”. We couldn’t agree more!
She is Queen of 152 commonwealth countries, supports over 600 charities and despite her grand age, continues a full time schedule. The blend Twinings has created reflects the commonwealth, with tea blended from Kenya, Sri Lanka and India.
The Queen has 4 children, 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren
Her Majesty has been painted more times than any other monarch in history. Her first was at age 7.
Ma’am is pronounced to rhyme with ham not harm.
The Imperial State Crown that the Queen wears at the State Opening of Parliament is set with 2,868 diamonds. She has opened parliament every year of her reign (except twice when pregnant).
The Queen is famous for her mini-empire of corgis! She has had over 30 corgis throughout her long life – at the height of their reign there were 15 of them! All of her dogs were bred from her first corgi, Susan. A gift from her father King George VI.
She has just four dogs today. Two corgis, called Holly and Willow. And two “dorgies” (her corgis were bred with Princess Margaret’s Dachshunds). They are called Candy and… Vulcan! A very big name for such a small dorg!
Her majesty is also a well-known tea lover. Buckingham palace has a special royal blend, and serves a variety of high quality (Twinings!) teas at the famous garden parties in the beautiful 40-acre garden. Over 1 million people have attended these parties during her reign.
In 1837, the Queen’s great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria granted Twinings its first Royal Warrant and appointed Twinings as supplier of teas to her household. Twinings has had the honour of supplying every successive British Monarch to date.
We hope you’ll enjoy celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday with Twinings delicious new blend of commonwealth tea in this very special, limited edition caddy.
From us all at Twinings:
