Orange flower is traditionally used to give a sense of calm in Southern Europe. Orange trees originate from Asia but are cultivated in many places across the globe. In France orange flower water is said to have been used by Marie Antoinette in her beauty regime. It flavoured many dishes in those times including madeleines and was used to scent the linen of the nobility.

What is Orange Blossom?

In spring the blossoms of fruit trees are a welcome sight and herald the fruit to come late in the summer and into the autumn. In the Southern Mediterranean, the blossom of the sweet orange tree is a familiar sight and gives arguably one of the most deliciously fragrant scents. Orange blossoms have been used in infusions, topical preparations and cooking since ancient times.

  • The name orange derives from the Persian name for the fruit 'naranj'.
  • Orange flower water is traditionally used as a helpful aid for digestion.
  • The essential oil of the blossoms is used in aromatherapy and is called neroli while the essential oils of the leaves and young shoots is called petitgrain. Orange essential oil is made from the peel.

  • Orange blossom added to an infusion makes a heady floral drink that soothes and relaxes.
  • Adding orange flower water to ice cream or other summer desserts gives a decadent floral note.
  • Use orange blossom water in place of your usual toner or in the bath to calm red, irritated skin and leave it feeling soft and smooth as silk.
