The Basics of Reading Tea Leaves

Ever wondered what your tea might have to say?

Reading tea leaves is one of those rituals that feels both playful and a little bit magical. A moment to pause, look a little closer, and let your imagination guide you... all from the bottom of your cup.

Ever wondered what your tea might have to say?

Reading tea leaves is one of those rituals that feels playful, a little bit magical, and just the right side of unexpected. A moment to pause, look a little closer, and let your imagination lead the way...all at the bottom of your cup.

While it’s been around for centuries, today it’s less about predicting the future and more about enjoying the ritual itself. A chance to slow things down, tune into your thoughts, and see what shapes (and stories) might reveal themselves.

A brief history

Tea leaf reading, also known as tasseography, has its roots in ancient tea-drinking cultures, where the leaves left behind in the cup began to spark curiosity.

As tea made its way to Europe in the 17th century, so did the practice. With nothing more than a cup and a handful of leaves, it became a simple (and often social) way to pass the time. Part ritual, part entertainment, and always open to interpretation.

Why give it a go?

Because sometimes, it’s nice to look at things a little differently.

Reading tea leaves isn’t about certainty; it’s about curiosity. A moment to pause after your last sip, take a closer look, and let your mind wander a little.

Think of it like spotting shapes in clouds. You might see something clear, or nothing at all. Either way, it’s the act of noticing that makes it interesting. Kind of like a mindful exercise.

When finishing off a cup of loose leaf tea, leaves often line the sides and base of the cup.

The idea behind reading tea leaves is that whilst drinking, a person’s movements affect the leaves swirling around, so that when they settle, the shapes are unique to them.

It is then up to the reader to interpret these shapes.

Choosing your tea

Loose leaf is the way to go here. It gives the leaves space to move and settle into more interesting shapes.

Green, black, herbal… whatever you’re in the mood for. The ritual stays the same each time, only the flavour changes.

Pick The Perfect Tea

How To read your tea leaves

There’s no strict way to do this, but a few simple steps can help you get started:

• Brew your tea using loose leaves in a cup (ideally one with a light, plain interior)

• As you finish, leave a small amount of liquid behind

• Give the cup a gentle swirl, letting the leaves move freely

• Turn the cup upside down onto a saucer, then lift it back up

Now comes the interesting part.

Take a moment to look inside. Notice where the leaves have settled, the shapes they’ve formed, and anything that catches your eye.

There’s no right or wrong here—just follow your instinct.

What to look for

Start with the handle

The handle is said to represent you. From there, you can move your gaze around the cup, noticing what appears and where.

Near or far

Shapes closer to the rim can feel more “present”, while those deeper in the cup might feel a little further away. Not fixed meanings, just gentle ways to explore what you see.

Fruit and herbal teas offer a delicious and refreshing alternative to your caffeinated tea. Why not swap a cup for a herbal or fruit infusion and enjoy its benefits?

Lines and patterns

You might notice lines, clusters, or scattered leaves. Some people associate these with movement, change, or direction, but it’s just as valid to decide what they mean to you.

Letters and shapes

Sometimes, a letter or a recognisable shape might stand out. A place, a person, a feeling —it’s all open to interpretation.

So, what do they mean?

That part is up to you.

Like dreams or daydreams, the shapes you see can mean different things depending on where you are in your life. A single shape might suggest something playful, reflective, or completely unexpected.

There’s no guidebook required, just your own perspective—and imagination!

A final thought

At its heart, tea leaf reading isn’t really about answers.

It’s about the pause after the last sip. The moment you linger a little longer. The chance to look, notice, and let your thoughts wander somewhere new.

And if nothing else, it’s a lovely excuse to make another cup.
