    Our Story

We want to play a leading role in helping to develop a progressive and thriving tea and herbs industry.

For more than 300 years, we have been perfecting our craft. As a company grounded in agriculture, we understand that every drink begins long before it reaches your cup – it begins with the land, the leaves and plants and the people.

Twinings first started selling dry tea in 1706 and is now a global wellbeing drinks brand, rooted in quality, craft, care and innovation.

Behind every cup is a 300-year lineage of passionate people dedicated to turning quality ingredients into blends that taste great and consumers love. Our mission is to make wellbeing accessible to everyone. We strive to be a responsible employer and sourcing partner, so that we can keep sharing our love of tea and infusions with the world

    Our Approach

Our approach to sustainability is guided by our understanding of the issues facing the tea and herb industry.

Like agricultural areas across the world, many of the communities in our supply chain face social and environmental challenges. We believe our Sourced with Care programme is necessary not only for the resilience of our business but the health of our planet, the needs of our consumers and the wellbeing of the people who make every drink possible.

We launched our Sourced with Care programme in 2016 to help support the people who grow our ingredients and their communities. Since then, we have evolved our strategy to help address environmental issues and reinforce our efforts to be a good employer and responsible business.

Where we source our ingredients from

Discover where our tea and herbs come from

From the highlands of Kenya to the foothills of India and the valleys of China, we source tea and herbs from gardens and farms around the world.

Across decades, we have worked to build a more resilient and transparent supply chain.

    Our Evolved Strategy

We’re putting our sustainability efforts into where we believe we can make the biggest positive difference. We have two priority areas for action and investment:

    • People in our communities: supporting the workers and communities who grow our ingredients to thrive
    • Environmental impacts: caring for the land, water and biodiversity that our tea and herbs depend on and working towards reducing our environmental footprint

    Where We Focus

    People in our communities

We have a role to play in improving the lives of the people behind everyTwinings drink. Our on-the-ground teams listen directly to the people who grow, pick and produce our tea and herbs, as well as their wider communities.Where we become aware of issues in our supply chain, we aim to work with suppliers and, where necessary others, to help address them. We also invest in local programmes that focus on supporting livelihoods, enhancing working conditions, providing educational opportunities and seeking to empower women. By working collaboratively, we strive to contribute to healthier, more resilient communities.

    Environmental Impacts

We know that a thriving tea and herbs industry depends on a thriving environment. That’s why we’re working to better understand and reduce our environmental impact.

We have set science-based targets to reduce emissions across our full value chain by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050. Because most of our carbon footprint lies in our supply chain, we’re focusing our efforts on supporting suppliers, farmers and partners with initiatives to help them reduce their emissions, enhance transport efficiency, minimise packaging and reduce material weight.

    Our People

We work hard to create a safe and inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive.

From developing talent and supporting wellbeing to fostering openness and belonging, we want every colleague to feel valued, respected and empowered.

At Twinings, we believe that when our people thrive, so does our business. That’s why we invest in nurturing the potential of our people, no matter their background, identity or location.

Protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of our employees and providing a safe environment for all those who work with us is a fundamental part of how we show care and respect for everyone.

    Our Packaging

All our packaging is purchased from third-party suppliers. Most is assembled in our own factories to package our products.

From switching to paper-based alternatives to cutting unnecessary plastic, we’re reimagining every step of how our teas and infusions are wrapped, packed and shipped.

    Governance

We strive to uphold high standards of ethics and responsible conduct, acting with integrity in accordance with our values in all we do. We are strengthening our approach by building out our policy framework and ensuring compliance from our key stakeholders.

    What we're doing

We’ve eliminated 20 kilotonnes (around 70%) of non-recyclable material from our packaging since 2020. Today, our packaging is substantially more environmentally friendly, certified compostable and widely recyclable, with unnecessary plastic like film wrap minimised.
