Five Things to Make With Jackfruit

In recent years, jackfruit has become a popular and trendy meat alternative thanks to its unique texture, similar to shredded meat. So whether you’re a vegan, a vegetarian, or you’re looking to try your hand at something a bit different, this sweet and tropical fruit is as versatile as they come.

When eaten raw, it tastes a little like pineapple or mango, yet when unripe, it soaks up plenty of flavour and seasoning, making it the perfect choice for vegan and vegetarian dishes. Plus, it’s packed full of B vitamins.

Our Top Five Dishes Using Jackfruit

1) Jackfruit Pancakes

A fresh take on a classic; crispy duck and pancakes. Create a fakeaway at home with these delicious jackfruit pancakes. Combine soya sauce, hoisin sauce, ginger, and five-spice to create a sauce and add the jackfruit. Let it cool before popping it in the fridge to marinate. When you’re ready to cook, place the jackfruit on a baking tray and heat it in the oven for around 20 minutes at 200 degrees.

Simply assemble your pancakes in the same way, with a bit of hoisin sauce, sliced cucumber and jackfruit ‘duck’. Then, roll and enjoy; a great dish to share with friends for a casual dinner.

Vegan Pulled Jackfruit Burger

2) Pulled Jackfruit Burger

For a tasty alternative to the classic burger, why not try a pulled jackfruit burger? Whether you’re trying to reduce the amount of meat or the amount of fat you’re consuming, get stuck into a juicy jackfruit burger.

Stir in spices and a little vegetable stock to chunks of jackfruit and cook for about 20 minutes. Once heated through, shred the jackfruit and serve in burger buns with your choice of dressing and salad. And, if you wanted that slow pulled pork-style flavour, you could follow the jackfruit and baked sweet potato recipe below for the ultimate shred!

3) Jackfruit Baked Sweet Potatoes

Looking for a delicious meal that’s packed full of flavour? Smother your jackfruit in a simple BBQ style rub and then pop it in a slow cooker (don’t have a slow cooker? Cook in the oven on a low heat for around 5-6 hours) until the jackfruit pulls apart with a fork. Serve over crispy sweet potato jackets with a little vegan butter or crème fraîche.

4) Tortilla Pizza With Pulled Jackfruit

One of the great things about jackfruit is its love of seasoning. From chillis and pepper to big BBQ flavours, it soaks up anything that’s added to it, making it a great alternative to meat. Add plenty of seasoning to your jackfruit, and you can use it on a whole range of dishes, including as a pizza topping. Why not try creating some simple homemade pizzas using tortilla wraps and loading them up with all your favourite toppings?

5) Pulled Jackfruit Chilli

Cook up a delicious chilli with plenty of heat, use cumin, paprika and beans and mix in some jackfruit to create a warming and spicy dish. Perfect with rice or on top of a baked potato with sour cream.

There’s no end to the delicious and flavoursome ways you can create great family recipes with jackfruit.
