Drink Up - How to Build the Habit of Hydration

Simple ways to integrate the habit of hydration into your day in a healthy, enjoyable and hassle-free way so you can feel at your best.

Drink Up! How to Build the Habit of Hydration

Life is full-on and some days it can be hard to meet even our most basic needs, eating right, sleeping well, and drinking plenty of fluids. We lead fast-paced lives and something as simple as not drinking enough can wreak havoc on our bodies, energy levels, and even our mood.

Which is why we have plenty of ways to help you integrate the habit of hydration into your day in a healthy, enjoyable and hassle-free way.

What Is Hydration?

Our bodies are made up of two thirds water and hydration is essentially our bodies ability to absorb the water that we drink and utilise it to ensure we’re functioning at our very best.

Every part of our body needs that vital water, from our cells and skin to our organs and even our joints. Around 20% of our water intake comes from the food we eat but the majority is required from the healthy fluids we need to consume throughout the day.

What Is Hydration?

Why Is It So Important to Stay Hydrated?

Our hydration levels directly impact our ability to get on with our day. Because our bodies are made up of nearly 70% water, we can’t actually function without it. Plus, keeping topped up on that vital H20 does wonders for keeping your skin looking healthy and radiant.

Why Is It So Important to Stay Hydrated?

Staying hydrated throughout the day gives you that vitality, energy and enthusiasm to get the very most from your day. You’ll soon know when you’re dehydrated because you’ll start to feel tired, lacking in energy and sluggish. In fact, the signs of dehydration can include headaches and brain fog, mood swings, dry or chapped lips and dull skin. But you’ll be able to notice how good your levels of hydration are via one simple test, the pee test: the paler your pee, the better.

When we’re thirsty and lacking in energy it’s so easy to reach for a quick-fix. Sugary, fizzy drinks might seem like a perfect pick-me-up but they tend to give us a quick boost in exchange for a quicker drop in energy levels, ironically making you feel more tired than before. So staying hydrated in a more sustainable way gives you the get up-and-go you need to embrace and appreciate your day.

How to Keep Your Head Above Water

Don’t wait till you're thirsty. By the time thirst kicks in you’re already slightly dehydrated so keep sipping. Here are some simple ways to build that habit.

1. Eat Up

Did you know, you can take in water from the foods you eat? Many fruits and vegetables contain large amounts of water like cucumber, lettuce and tomato. So incorporating healthy vegetables in your diet can kill two birds with one stone! Staying healthy and hydrated.

2. Jazz Up Your Water

Adding slices of lemon, orange, cucumber or sprigs of mint can enliven your water. You can make a large jug of it in the morning and just keep on pouring throughout the day.

Tap water is almost free, and adding these little sprigs and slices of joy keep it calorie and sugar free, too.

3. Cut the Caffeine

Caffeine free, hassle free, calorie free and 100% natural! Go fruity with our Twinings Fruit and Herbal infusions.

We have a fruity and herbal infusion for every occasion and they’re the perfect way to colour your day and boost your water intake. Sugar and caffeine free with only 4 calories per cup, they’re a delicious, fruity, and fabulous alternative to caffeinated and fizzy drinks.

4. Pop the Kettle on

Whilst tea and coffee do contain caffeine - which is a diuretic - your body is still going to absorb the water from your essential morning cuppa. Our favourite is Twinings Strong English Breakfast to start the day off with a pep in your step! (Doctors recommend no more than 400 mg of caffeine per day – that’s about 4 cups of tea or 2 of coffee).

5. Cold Brew

Our latest range of Cold Infuse tea bags are the perfect blend of herbs, fruits, vitamins and minerals. These pretty little pyramid tea bags can be dropped into your water bottle, topped up with water, shaken (not stirred!) and sipped on throughout the day. Sugar-free and packed full of flavour, there’s a Cold Infuse bag for every mood, whether you need a moment to breathe, a little clarity, or to replenish your energy.

6. Go Green

Twinings Green Teas are also wonderful for giving you that lift in the afternoons. With lower caffeine content than regular black teas, our range of green tea infusions are beautifully blended to create a vibrant yet sensuous taste and smell.

We have stunningly imaginative blends like mango and lychee that can really give you that revitalising boost of energy. Just like with our fruit infusions, you can pour these teas over crushed ice – not only refreshing in hot weather, but another great way to sneak some of that all-important water in.
