Five Things to Make With Tofu

Tofu or not tofu that is the question. Made from condensed soy milk, in a similar process to cheese, tofu is a great ingredient for making vegetarian and vegan dishes whilst ensuring you’re packing plenty of protein into your diet.

Like cheese, tofu comes in a range of different varieties, from silken, which is a softer form and perfect for use in smoothies and mousses, to both firm and extra firm that’s great for mashing.

Whipped, fried, scrambled, and baked, thanks to its versatility, tofu is an excellent base for a huge range of dishes, and it’s really rather filling!

Here are our top five favourite dishes to make with tofu.

Our Top Five Things to Make With Tofu

Tofu Stir Fry & Noodles

1) Stir Fry & Noodles

Tofu works wonders in Asian-inspired dishes, and a classic stir fry with noodles is a great way to pack your dinner with veggies and mix in some extra protein for good measure.

  • Simply rinse and drain your tofu, dry in a towel, and cut into chunks.
  • Heat a little oil in a wok, throw in your tofu and stir fry with some soya sauce for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add your chopped stir fry vegetables, such as spring onions, peppers, bean sprouts and mange tout, and stir for a further minute or two.
  • Serve with your choice of noodles.

2) Tofu Fried Rice

Great as a side dish or as a tasty and filling lunch all on its own, tofu fried rice is extremely simple. Whilst your rice is cooking, heat tofu and vegetables in a pan and cook in a splash of sesame oil, soya sauce and a dash of hoisin sauce. For a non-vegan alternative, you can add eggs to make it tofu and egg fried rice. Just add the rice and egg to the pan and mix it all together.

3) Crispy Sesame Tofu

Create a takeaway treat with tofu by marinading it in a mix of soya sauce, ginger, rice vinegar, garlic and plenty of black pepper. Leave it in the fridge to marinate. Then, when you’re ready to cook it, in a separate bowl, mix sesame seeds and flour. Cover the marinated tofu with the flour and lightly fry for a few minutes on each side.

A perfect accompaniment to your stir fry veggies and rice. Garnish with some sliced spring onions.

4) Scrambled Tofu on Toast

The choices are endless when it comes to topping your toast, and tofu is another great way to pimp up your toast. Make a real meal of it by frying an onion in some oil with a little turmeric, cumin, and paprika. Mashup some firm tofu and add to the pan; cook for a few more minutes. Top with diced or slightly cooked cherry tomatoes and sprinkle with a bit of parsley, basil, and chilli flakes to taste.
