Afternoon Tea Recipes

Discover the recipes and secrets to creating an afternoon tea full of delicious treats and joy.

There is something timeless about afternoon tea. The ritual, the tea blends, the cake and sandwiches, the decadence.

Whether you're celebrating with friends, gathering the family, or simply treating yourself to a solo spread or bringing something to someone else's tea, afternoon tea brings together the comfort of tradition with the joy of creativity. And no two tea tables need look the same. From loose leaf classics to bold infusions, dainty bakes to unique recipes there’s a world of flavour to explore.

Time for Tea

Choosing the right tea is half the fun of hosting an afternoon tea. And, with so many different blends and flavours, there's something to suit every guest, every mood, and every occasion.

Loose leaf teas bring a little extra theatre to the table, from the light notes of Darjeeling to the boldness of Assam, or maybe something a bit less traditional, such as an Oolong tea. Whatever loose leaf tea you go for, there's added joy to spooning out the leaves, and letting it brew before sipping and savouring.

Food Pairing

For something softer, a caffeine-free herbal infusion like camomile or a fruit and herbal infusion can pair really well with whatever delights you have on your table. Why not pair your cakes and sweet treats with your tea blends:

Sweet citrus cakes: Earl Grey tea has a distinct citrusy flavour and is strong enough to cleanse the palate and cut through the sharpness of citrusy cakes, bringing out the sweetness.

Cream tea and cream cakes: The strong and malty flavour of Assam black tea compliments creamy foods and provides a balance to the sweetness.

Sponge cake: Try something with a hint of vanilla to really enhance that buttercream icing or to complement the jam. Like our Earl Grey with creamy vanilla, or a Moment of Calm.

Lemon cakes or custard tarts: Lady Grey and English Breakfast tea go wonderfully with any lemon flavouring, and are both full-bodied enough for strong flavours. Or try a Lemon & Ginger tea lemon and ginger tea .

Have a selection of teas and let your guest choose their blends, or try different blends with different sandwiches and cakes to see what your guests enjoy best.
